Were Obama Supporters Misguided?

By Shecky

I’m not going argue about the magnificence of Obama’s marketing machine, especially on the internet.  Those of us in the marketing community learned a lot from his example.

I’m also not here to make a political commentary about whether Barack Obama was a better choice than John McCain, or even Hillary Clinton….those arguments have been bludgeoned to death.  Whether or not you supported Obama, he’s the President elect, and deserves all of our support.

But, have you noticed what’s going on in our country right now?  It was apparent when looking BETWEEN the marketing and the politics.  It was evident when watching the interviews of people coming out of the polling booths.  It was obvious that people were placing their hopes and dreams on Obama.  obama halo 1 Were Obama Supporters Misguided?

What I mean to say is, nobody seems to believe in themselves anymore.  Nobody wants to take any personal responsibility.  In the scenes shown from Grant Park in Chicago during Obama’s acceptance speech, people were crying and bowing to him as if he were a Messiah.

How can people believe so strongly in one man?  Notwithstanding his intelligence and education, it is NOT because he is a Messiah.  He is still just a human being.  No, it because many people have lost themselves.  They’ve lost their ability to believe in themselves.  They are expecting their government to take care of them, so they don’t have to take care of themselves.
Of course, this mindset continues to spin out of control.  The ripple effect is enormous.  Elected officials allow industries to go unchecked.  Then, mismanaged corporations seek huge bailouts.  Aren’t you wondering where and when it’s going to stop?

Harry S. Truman kept a sign on his desk at the white house.  The sign read:  “The buckstopsherefrontsmall 300x80 Were Obama Supporters Misguided?Buck Stops Here.”  This was derived from the slang expression “pass the buck” which we all have come to know as passing the responsibility to someone else.

So, you see…the answer is clear.  We can all take a page from Harry Truman’s book, and recognize that the buck stops with OURSELVES.  We must not look to others to save us, fix us, or better our own economics.  It is only when we recognize that we are truly masters of our own lives, that we can move forward in any economy or set of circumstances.

I’m proud to be part of an industry that promotes this mindset.  I can only hope that you take this to heart.  Move forward with your own life.  Forget about the recession….make your own economy.  Live life on your own terms, and be responsible for yourself.  It’s the best feeling in the world!

Just watched your video about “The Last Lecture”. Thanks for explaining who Randy Pausch was. I saw a video of him on Sta.rtup.biz but didn’t know who he was.

I just started a blog about video learning and I would love to post this clip on my site with your permission. I will, of course, give full credit to you and your site. Let me know.

I cannot speak for all Obama supporters. I know I was not misled when I voted on November 4th.

It was through great disillusionment and a sense of responsibility for my misguided support of George Bush that I voted for our new President. In my personal way, I cast that vote to help rectify the moral, constitutional and economic turmoil in this country by elevating Barack Obama to the presidency.

If President Obama governs with the same creative intelligence, quiet determination, political savvy and sense of justice he showed during his campaign, I think this country will make immeasurable strides and regain its equilibrium during the next four years.
