Why I Moved To Austin
Posted by: | CommentsOver the last couple of years, I’ve been learning how to market on the internet. Initially, I was using my new skills to promote my Network Marketing efforts. More recently, I’ve come to realize that these skills are transferrable to many other applications.
I had lived in San Antonio for over two decades. It’s a great place. People are friendly, and it’s very easy to get around. I enjoyed it a lot. It’s also very close to Austin.
Austin is only 80 miles up the road. Considering how close it is, it is quite remarkable how different it really is from San Antonio. I always had fun going to Austin. It was like a getaway. A chance to be away from home and let loose. It’s a place where anything goes.
The obvious things that you’ve heard about Austin are all true. People are very fitness conscious, the level of education is very high, there is a very vibrant music scene, and the high tech industry is booming. Because it is the State Capitol and a college town, it’s a place where people are very politically aware, and know how to party!
What you may not know is how entreneurial Austin is. More specifically, it has become a mecca for many of the so-called Gurus in the Internet Marketing arena.
About a year ago, I started coming up to Austin for a Meetup Group called the Internet Markeeting Party. I connected with David Gonzalez, a very successful internet marketer, who runs the Internet Marketing Parties. To call this a meetup group would be an understatement. Many of the people who come to these mixers are the who’s who of Internet Marketing.

What’s even more amazing is the caliber of the speakers that David has been able to assemble. In less than a year, I have made friends with some very influential marketers. Most of them are very down to earth, yet have the capability to move a LOT of eyeballs! Being able to connect with people like this is very exciting. They are so open, and willing to share information…it is a small, but vibrant community.
So, sometimes you just have to say WTF! I went through a very dark period in San Antonio over the last 3-4 years. I decided that I could not look at Austin as a “getaway” any longer, but that it was time to make it my home.
I wanted to be part of this. I wanted to be part of the buzz…of this amazing community of forward-thinking people. Of course, I had friends that had moved up here over the years, and knew a few people here, but I wanted to get in the middle of all of this.
So, I did what any sane person would do. I sold EVERYTHING. I sold my house, my furniture, and even my old car. Why? Because it was time to start fresh in my new home.
I now live in a nice little apartment right on Town Lake, overlooking downtown. I’m walking distance to Downtown, SoCo, amazing restaurants and coffee shops. More importantly, I’m CONNECTING. I’ve been here less that 3 weeks, and have already had lunches, coffee, and parties with some incredible people. I have made more connections in 18 days than I would have ever dreamed of.
I’m not going to lie. This amount of change is not easy. I live in a different place with different furniture, driving a different car, have a different daily routine, and now have different friends. It’s a LOT of change all at once. But, I am embracing it, and it is all working out beautifully.
Whatever it is you are pursuing, I can only encourage you to think about making some big changes in your life….the kinds of changes that can allow you to make new friends, breathe different air, get new ideas. Just remember how important the power of association is. You don’t have to take things to the extremes that I did, but if you decide to move to Austin, feel free to look me up. I’ll be happy to show you around, and introduce you to some incredible people!
Best,

No Excuses Summit Review And Testimonial
Posted by: | CommentsOn the weekend of July 9-11, 2010, 900 (yes nine HUNDRED) of the top Internet Network Marketers converged on The Venetian Hotel in Las Vegas to make history.
The event was hosted by Raymond Fong and Fernando Ceballos, two of the top SEO experts in the world. They were able to convince the top marketing experts in the industry to come together just for one weekend, for a no-holds-barred training, mindset, and networking event the likes of which will never be seen again.
The talent and energy in that room was incredible. In a word….electric! I made so many new friends, rekindled friendships with others, and connected with so many powerful people. The No Excuses Seminar was just that. A chance to learn from the best, and realize that anyone can be successful, if they just apply the knowledge….no excuses!
Do not ever underestimate the power of live events. Aside from the incredible training, they are a way to greatly accelerate your growth.
I have no idea if there will be another event like this. But, if there is….don’t miss it. NO EXCUSES!
To your success,
Shecky
Is Twitter Dead?
Posted by: | CommentsAbout a year ago, I got pretty involved in Twitter. I was meeting some really great people, networking and connecting. It was fun, and I was even getting leads from it. There was always some new course being offered, and new “twitter celebrities” were popping up all the time.
The active people on Twitter were also very good at policing things….too many marketing messages were frowned upon, and for the most part, things worked pretty well. There was a communication frenzy going on that was almost intoxicating.
Then, about 6 months ago, the bottom fell out. The cat was out of the bag. Many pseudo-marketers looked at it as a forum for blasting their messages. People got onto Twitter in droves, and just started spamming the entire community. Twitter did ban a lot of offenders, but they simply could not keep up with the people who insisted on littering the community with blatant marketing messages.
Back in the “good old days,” I had about 3,500 followers. If I put out an article, or a thought-provoking post, I could get about 40-50 eyeballs on it in a 24 hour period. Now I have 23,000 followers, and I am a better marketer. I am putting out better quality material. And now, I am lucky if I get 1-2 looking at my posts.
For most of the people who’ve been following me on Twitter, you’ve noticed (or have you?) that I don’t spend as much time on Twitter anymore. I find it much more difficult to make real connections, as there is so much litter to wade through. So, I now do most of my networking on Facebook.
I recently UNfriended (yes, UN) about 4,000 people on Facebook, just to get back to a manageable number of people that I was really connecting with. It has proven to be a really good move for me. I am now really connecting with the people that I really want to get to know. Isn’t that what Social Media is all about?
So, is Twitter dead? You tell me.

TweetCamp San Antonio Jam Band
Posted by: | CommentsYesterday, I attended my very first TweetCamp. If you don’t know what that is, don’t worry…I didn’t either until recently. TweetCamp is a place for Twitter users to get together and share ideas. Yeah, I know….it sounds about as nerdy as band camp, right?
The format is that of an “UnConference.” Again, I was not familiar with this, but here’s how it works. At the beginning of the day, everybody posts a lists of topics that they would like covered. From there, those topics are scheduled into time slots. People that are experts in those topics then volunteer to present information and teach the other attendees about these topics.
It turned out to be a GREAT day. I took a lot of notes, and got a TON of great information. I reconnected with some people that I had previously met through our Internet Marketing group (MIMOSA), but I also connected with a lot of other great people, who are very active in social media. People came from all over the of Texas, and as you know, it’s a big state!
Because of my use of some advanced Twitter software, I was aksed to present in the “Killer Apps” time slot. It was filmed, and I will eventually release that as a separate training video, as soon as its available.
At the end of a fun and educational day, some of us got together at Alan Weinkrantz’s house, to create the WORLD’s FIRST TweetCamp Jam Band….and it was right here in San Antonio. We had a lot of fun….here’s a quick video of some of the shenanigans.
This was a great ending to a great day. San Antonio has a very active and cohesive Social Media community. We’re all looking forward to the next event with great anticipation!

Justin Christianson Speaks At Inaugural MIMOSA Event
Posted by: | CommentsThe other night, we hosted our inaugural MIMOSA event in San Antonio. MIMOSA stands for “Millionaire Internet Marketers of San Antonio.” Our motto: You don’t have to be a millionaire, you just have to think like one.

Scot, Emily, & Shecky
This was conceived and organized by myself, and a very dynamic couple, Scot and Emily McKay, who are very successful Internet Marketers in the relationship and dating arena. After attending a couple of similar mixers in the Austin area, we knew this was something that San Antonio needed. There is a growing community of successful Internet Marketers in the San Antonio and South Texas area. We felt it was time for us to come together to meet, network, exchange ideas, and support each other.
Our first event was held at a cool pub called the Lion & Rose in the northern suburbs. We were fortunate to have our own little room at the back of the bar. We had a better

Justin
turn out than expected, and squeezed all 36 of us into that little room in the back. It was great fun. I was able to meet face to face with people like Alicia Sanera, Colleen Pence, Michael Long, and Neven Jones….these were all people that I had been communicating with on Twitter. It’s wonderful to connect in 3-D, after only knowing each other in 2-D!
The highlight of the evening was listening to Justin Christianson speak. We were fortunate to have him drive down from Austin, and share his wisdom with us. Justin is a self-made millionaire, and is now the CFO of Magnetic Sponsoring, LLC. I was able to steal him afterwards for a brief interview. The bar was noisy and dark, so the quality of the video is not great, but I was able to get Justin to lay some golden nuggets of wisdom on us. I’m working on some editing now, and will share that in my next post. Trust me…you will DEFINITELY want to see this video.
Thanks to everyone who came out. Scot, Emily, and myself are all very excited about the next event. We have already secured a great speaker for next month….stay tuned!
All the best,
Shecky
